Seriously!: Prologue + Chapter 1
October 30, 2007 2:50 am Original Fiction, Seriously!A weird idea that came to while I was cramming for my exams XD. Enjoy ^^
———
It was a case of carelessness on my part. Procrastination became my best friend as the entire school year whizzed by. Due to my heinous work ethic, it was no surprise for my teacher that I had ended up spending a couple of days of my summer in school.
Pathetic, party of one.
Okay, maybe I’m not the only kid who got stuck in this mess. There were a few others who were on the same boat as me.“The Chosen Ones” my friend Sasha joked when I told her the news. I was not amused. Not at all.
The only good thing about this was my ‘sentence’ was reasonably shorter than the rest of my fellow inmates. I just need to finish what I had to do in two weeks and I would be able to enjoy my summer vacation like everyone else.
Sounds easy enough… right? Oh. Better not jinx it then.
My name’s Adelle, by the way.

Chapter One: Cue Symphony No. 5
Sunday, the Night Before
“Promise you’ll keep me posted about the summer school thing?”
After one bad joke to another about my situation, Sasha was now on best friend mode. On the receiving end of her phone call, I could tell her voice was a little hoarse from a cold she was going through.
Forgive me for going on a tangent but who gets a cold in the summer time? Anyway…
“Yeah, sure,” I said while gathering all the stuff I needed for the next day. “Stop calling us ‘Chosen Ones’ though.”
Sasha laughed. Actually, it sounded like a combination of a chuckle and a cough. Even though she couldn’t see me, I was giving the phone a withering look.
“I mean it, Sasha.” I went, stuffing my text books and laptop in my messenger bag.
“It’s a term of endearment, Adelle,” she said while I was looking under the bed for my power cord. “You know, you could’ve asked for my help if you were having trouble before…”
“That’s sweet, Sasha, but you were busy,” Balancing the phone on my shoulder, I used my free arm to grab the little bugger. “I didn’t want to trouble you.”
“Adelle,” her tone had warning. I chuckled in response and kept my voice light and airy when I spoke.
“I thought you have plans of becoming our batch’s valedictorian?”
“But you’re my friend. I wouldn’t have minded if you asked.”
“Hold on a sec,” I plopped the phone on my bed; both arms were free to try and get the infernal power chord from the dust bunnies.
I was able to grasp the thing in my fist. Problem was I got up too quickly and bumped my head on the edge of the bed. Hard.
“Holy shi—“ that nasty expletive was nicely tucked in my breath when I remembered my parents’ room was right across mine. “Great.”
“Adelle?” I heard Sasha go when the phone was pressed to my ear again. “Bumped your head again?”
“Her royal gracelessness just went medieval on her own head.” I replied dryly while rubbing my head with my free hand. It was a little tender.
Another giggle escaped from Sasha. “Aww sweetie. Get ice. I’ll wait.”
“You’re the best.”
“Adie! Adie! Look, look!” My little sister Tisha (from Patricia) was brandishing something when I came down to the kitchen to get ice.Oh yeah. Only Tisha can get away with calling me “Adie”, so don’t anyone of you even try to use that cutesy nickname on me!“Tisha! Tisha! What, what?” she pouted when I parroted her so I pecked her temple to say sorry. I was forgiven rather quickly judging by the little giggle that escaped her.“I made another kwolaaage in day camp today.” She beamed when I took the paper from her. “It’s Megan’s kitty!”
“’Collage’, Tisha,” I patted her head and stared at the piece. My little Tisha is a budding artist! “Megan… oh, her kitten Christopher?”
“Chris-chris boy!” she squealed and I laughed.
What was I going to do? Right., ice for pseudo-concussion.
I padded over the refrigerator and opened the freezer door. I was about to reach for the ice tray when I felt Tisha tugging the hem of my shorts. I looked down.
“Did you hurt your head,, Adie?”
“Hmm?”
“Your face is all smushed up and you’re rubbing your head.”
“I’m fine,” I said, patting her head affectionately. “just getting ice for the bump.”
“Want me to find the pack Mommy uses?”
“I’ll manage, Tisha. Thank you.”
There was a pause from her, which was strange since this four year old always had a lot to say.
“Tisha?” I closed the freezer door and kneeled down to her level, cocking my head a little at her. “Something wrong?”
“Take care of yourself, Adie,” she said, then pecking the top of my head. “Promise?”
“Promise.”
“Took you long enough.”“Aw. I missed you too,” I cooed at the receiver while Sasha snorted in response. “Sorry. Little sister got cute on me,… And no, you may not eat her Sasha.”“Awwwww.”“Charming,” After making sure I had everything in my bag, my full attention was back on talking to Sasha on the phone. “Anyway, so the schedule thing you emailed me..”
“What about it?”
“You think I’ll be able to follow it?”
“With a lot of self-control, discipline, and arm twisting, sure, it’s plausible..”
“Your unwavering support is astounding, Daniels.”
“I try Mackenzie, I really do.”
Sigh. It’s tough having the smartest girl in school as your best friend…
